Tales From The Watermill

Updated: Jun 25, 2020

At the Watermill, we have several projects running concurrently as we refurbish the house and outbuildings. The main house is attached to the Watermill. It’s a Suffolk Long House originally lived in by the Miller I Lowe in 1800. Various parts have been added to the house overtime. I want to create the feeling of a Rustic Farmhouse with pantiles & stone floors, soft and natural textures and warm neutral earthy tones. My interior design style is eclectic in that I love to match in vintage & modern classic pieces found in France, Morocco and England with contemporary modern furniture much as you find my brand #WeaverandFound. As the projects progress, I will keep you posted with updated tales.

The Watermill is grade 2 star listed, so we aren’t planning any structural changes to the existing interior. Some of the rooms were dark colours of deep red and green and now the whole palette is refreshed with Little Green Portland Stone and woodwork in white eggshell which gives a modern feel and links the rooms in a more holistic way. We pay attention to the architectural details such as sockets, switch plates. As these are touch points around the property we choose high quality brass fittings to match existing antique door furniture.

The Hallway is a grand space and probably the most original part of the house with a door directly into the Watermill. The flagstone floor is soft sandy stone colours and there is an open fireplace with wood burner. Although the ceiling isn’t high we have two French antique wall lights with fleur-de-lys design and below this a gorgeous 19th Century Drapers table bought in Provence, its tapered legs are carved in solid walnut with a patinated oak top. It’s great for displaying and photographing all the new finds soon to be on #WeaverandFound. At the moment we have two incredible antique Portuguese Bee hives made from cork bark and held together with sticks & resin, they make gorgeous sculptural displays and a fun talking point as everyone likes to guess what they are. There is always a collection of vintage industrial baskets at Weaver & Found and these like to reside on the lower shelf of the table. I am now on the hunt for an antique Library Chair or wingback to place by the fire. Tom really likes these tall wicker chairs from Orkney, I will keep you posted on what we find.

The main reception room in the heart of the house has a large brick open fireplace and the circa 1910 giant French Champagne Wine Basket looks fabulous filled with logs waiting to burn. The curtains are informal, chunky soft herringbone fabric in deep prune. We already had our favourite Matthew Hilton Oscar sofa so we decided to recover this and buy another, this cosy space is finished off with a deep pile Moroccan #BeniOuraincarpet with plum & grey coloured borders and diamonds. White Hay side tables are great for drinks and plants. I am busy making terraniums with succulents which look beautiful dotted around the house. I love plants and enjoy cuttings from the gardens. At the moment Spring is here and the yellow blossoms from the trees look great in large soft grey Burgundy Confit pots. In the walled garden, I will be planting climbing David Austin roses in buttery cream blooms and white Peonies, both of which I had in my wedding bouquet, and I’m looking forward to these cut flowers in the house with their wonderful scent & texture.
